Evansville Museum of Arts & Science

This general museum has comprehensive collections in art, history, anthropology, and science. Enjoy paintings from the 16th century to the present, stroll down turn-of-the-century Main Street, amaze the kids with hands-on exhibits in the Science Center, stargaze at a show at Koch Planetarium and browse the gift shop. The EMTRAC (Evansville Museum Transportation Center) features the history of transportation in Evansville and historic railroad cars. Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden

Covering 70 acres, Mesker Park Zoo & Botanical Garden is Indiana’s largest zoo in area. Exhibits feature over 500 animals including Donna the hippopotamus, monkeys, lions, tigers, giraffes, rhino, kangaroos, and many more. Visit the interactive Prairie Dog Exhibit where children can tunnel with the animals, walk the two-and-a-half mile path surrounding the crystal clear lake with lush plants and flowers. Rent a pedal-powered paddleboat or ride the tram through the zoo park. Special children’s area and concessions are available. Open 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. 365 days a year.

Angel Mounds State Historic Site

Located on Evansville’s east side, Angel Mounds is the site of a large prehistoric Native American town that flourished circa 950 A.D. to 1450 A.D. Visitors can tour the town’s reconstructed buildings, stockade, nature preserve, and an interpretive center complete with full-size recreations of Native American houses, a gift shop, observation area, and interactive computer station. Open March 15 – December 31, Tuesday – Saturday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Reitz Home Museum

Located in Evansville’s Riverside Historic District, the Reitz Home Museum is a 3-story,17-room Victorian mansion lavishly decorated in style and elegance typical of the late 19th century. The French Second Empire home was built in 1871 by German immigrant John Augustus Reitz who had made his fortune in the lumber business. Reitz’s son, Francis Joseph, inherited the home after his parents’ death and had it redecorated in the 1890s in a variety of Victorian styles. Tours are available and begin in the Visitor Center located in the Carriage House behind the mansion. Tours Tuesday – Saturday, 11 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m. – 3:30p.m.

Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve

In the heart of the city visitors will find Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve, an ancient forest encompassing nearly 200 acres of virgin bottomland hardwood forest and another 50 acres of younger forest, field, and pond. Wesselman Woods is registered as a National Natural Landmark and a State Nature Preserve and features a wide variety of trees, wildflowers, deer, birds, and numerous other wildlife. A section of the historic Wabash & Erie Canal is also located within the preserve. Tuesday – Sunday, hours vary seasonally.

The Howell Wetlands Outdoor Education Center
The Wetland Education Center is one of only two Urban wetlands left in Indiana. What was once a polluted, garbage filled eyesore has now become a major center for educational programs within the school corporation and is frequently visited by other state entities involved in wetland restoration. The wetlands has become an asset to the neighborhoods and is heavily frequented by local residents.
Willard Library

The oldest public library in Indiana, Willard Library was founded in 1885 by local philanthropist Willard Carpenter. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is an outstanding example of High Victorian Gothic architecture, designed by nationally renowned architects James and Merritt Reid. In addition to Willard Carpenter’s extensive collection of abolitionist literature, the library houses a vast collection of genealogical records. Library lore includes multiple reports of sightings of the “Lady in Gray” who haunts the library building. Virtual visitors can go to www.willard.lib.in.us and click on the “Ghostcam” prompt to watch for a glimpse of the famous lady. Grey Lady Ghost Tours are offered during October. This recently refurbished vintage 1918 building and outdoor market includes a deli and a variety of shops offering baked goods, arts and crafts, delicious specialty foods and treats. The outside covered market area includes a landscape and garden center and a number of vendors offering fresh flowers and seasonal produce. Hours vary seasonally. Call for information.
Burdette Park

Located on Evansville’s west side, the 150-acre Burdette Park offers hiking trails, camping, tennis courts, miniature golf, batting cages and a water park complete with swimming, water slides, and bumper boat pools. Party houses are available for day events, and chalets complete with kitchen fireplace and Jacuzzi in the master bedrooms are available for overnight or longer rental periods. The Greenway Passage will be constructed to Burdette park via University of Southern Indiana where it will tie to the American Discovery Trail.
